China News on February 20Italian police said Thursday they have arrested an Egyptian national suspected of smuggling 7 migrants into the Mediterranean Sea and causing them to die of hypothermia, Eurolink quoted THE European Union News agency as saying.The suspects are accused of organizing a boat carrying 287 migrants to make the dangerous crossing, according to reports.Most of the migrants had colds when they were picked up by the Italian coast guard on January 25.Seven migrants died of hypothermia on the overcrowded boat due to poor sailing conditions, police said in a statement.Police said they identified the suspect through testimony from survivors.It emerged that the suspect had been convicted in 2011 for a human smuggling case in Sicily.No further details were provided.According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 11,986 migrants have arrived in Europe via the Mediterranean so far in 2022, and some 229 have died or gone missing while trying to reach Europe by sea.(Huang Xin) Source: China News Network
